Chuck Morse Responds to NH District Court Ruling on HB544

May 28, 2024

Concord, NH – Gubernatorial candidate Chuck Morse issued a statement today in response to the New Hampshire District Court's decision to strike down HB544, a bill that he championed to prohibit the teaching of racist materials in classrooms across the state.

"While I am deeply disappointed by the court's decision to strike down HB544, I remain steadfast in my commitment to ensuring that our classrooms are places of learning and respect, free from divisive and racist ideologies. HB544 was a crucial step towards creating an educational environment that focuses on unity and equality, and I will not be deterred by this setback.

“As a candidate for Governor, I pledge to continue the fight against racism in our education system. As Governor, I will work tirelessly with lawmakers, educators, and community leaders to draft and pass a stronger bill that addresses the court's concerns while keeping our fundamental goal intact: to prevent the dissemination of any materials that promote racial superiority or inferiority.

“We must equip our students with the tools to think critically and engage with each other respectfully, without the influence of biased and discriminatory teachings. My administration will prioritize transparency, and adherence to constitutional principles to ensure that any new legislation will stand up to judicial scrutiny and serve the best interests of our students.

“I believe in the power of education to shape the future of our state and our country. By working together, we can create an environment where every student, regardless of race, background, or belief, has the opportunity to succeed without fear of bias or discrimination."
